THE CAUCASUS

The Caucasus mountain system stretches for 1200 km from the Black Sea on the west to the Caspian Sea on the east, forming a natural barrier between the plains of Russia on the north and the mountain regions of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on the south. Though comparable in character to the European Alps, the Caucasus Mountains are considerably higher and many of their peaks exceed the altitude of 4000 - 5000 m.

The Caucasus Mountains are divided into three sections - the Western, Central and Eastern Caucasus. Mount Elbrus (5642 m, the highest peak in Europe) marks the western limit of the Central Caucasus, while Mount Kazbek (5033 m) marks the eastern limit. The Central Caucasus is the heart of the Caucasus, the highest part of the system with the most famous and beautiful mountains like Mt. Ushba (4710 m), Mt. Chatyn (4368 m), Mt. Donguzorun (4468 m) or the Bezengi Wall with its 5000-m peaks.
